Atlanta Braves vs. Washington Nationals

The Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals meet on Friday in game one of their series in Atlanta.  The Braves are -170 favorites over the Nationals with an over/under run total set at 7.5 runs.

The Atlanta Braves are the leaders in the National League Wildcard race and look to be comfortably in the post season at this point. The Braves are 6-4 in their last 10 games, 40-32 at home this season, and have a five game lead in the Wildcard. As a team the Braves are hitting .250 with Reed Johnson hitting .313, Chipper Jones and Martin Prado both at .297, and Michael Bourn at .277. As a team the Braves pitching staff has an ERA of 3.59 with the starters at 3.91 and the bullpen at 2.98. For game one against the Nats Atlanta starts Kris Medlin who hasn’t lost as a starter this season. For the year Medlin has allowed 86 hits and 20 earned runs while striking out 89 over 110 innings for a 1.64 ERA.

The Washington Nationals have led the NL East most of the season and it is looking like they will finish the season as NL East champs. The Nationals are 8-2 in their last 10 games, 45-27 on the road this season, and they are 8.5 games up in the division. As a team the Nationals are hitting .262 with Jayson Werth hitting .306, Ian Desmond at .295,, and Ryan Zimmerman at .287. As a team the Nationals pitching staff has an ERA of 3.29 with the starters at 3.31 and the bullpen at 3.25. For game one against the Braves Washington starts Ross Detweiler who has won three of his last four decisions. For the season Detweiler has allowed 130 hits and 52 earned runs while striking out 89 over 145 innings for a 3.23 ERA.

Atlanta is 4-1 in their last five home games, 30-12 in their last 42 games against the NL East, and 22-4 in Medlin’s last 26 starts. Washington is 4-1 in their last five against the NL East, 36-15 in their last 51 games overall, and 4-1 in Detweiler’s last five starts. Washington has won four of the last five meetings of these two.

It’s tough to go against Medlin but at this price it’s a tougher call against a solid team like the Nationals but the Braves are the play none the less.
