Washington Redskins vs. Indianapolis Colts
The top two picks in the 2012 NFL Draft face off on Saturday as the Washington Redskins host the Indianapolis Colts in a week three NFL preseason game. The Redskins are -3 point favorites over the Colts with an over/under point total set at 41.
The Washington Redskins have split their first two preseason games but despite the score looking close in the second game at Chicago it was more window dressing as they scored 21 points in the fourth quarter against the bottom of the depth chart. Robert Griffin III remains accurate at the NFL level completing nearly 65 percent of his passes but his breakaway speed and elusiveness which is still present isn’t quite as much of a factor against NFL speed as he has been sacked three times while Kirk Cousins has seen plenty of action throwing three touchdowns and an interception thus far. Alfred Morris has gotten the bulk of the carries in the backfield but both Roy Helu and Evan Royster are averaging over four yards per carry and Tim Hightower will be the starter. Aldrick Robinson has eight catches and Pierre Garcon and Niles Paul have five each as the Redskins still have a lot of decisions to make in the receiver spots. Defensively Ryan Kerrigan has two sacks and Cedric Griffin and Bryan Kehl each have seven takcles but the defense had trouble in Chicago stopping Brandon Marshall. Overall the Redskins have allowed 182 yards rushing and 426 yards passing.
The Indianapolis Colts are hoping last season was an aberration but in the process they hope to have picked up the cornerstone and face of the franchise for the next decade in QB Andrew Luck. Luck as looked polished in the first two preseason games just over 63 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions while both Drew Stanton and Chandler Harnish look like upgrades in the backup role. Vick Ballard has carried the load in the preseason averaging 3.9 yards per carry and starter Donald Brown averages 4.0 thus far. Reggie Wayne has six catches through the first two games while T.Y. Hilton has five and Coby Fleener has four. Defensively Jerry Hughes leads the Colts with 11 tackles and three sacks, Kevell Conner has nine tackles, and Antoine Bethea has an interception but the Colts looked a little overmatched by the Steelers first unit on Sunday. Overall the Colts have allowed 214 rushing yards but just 365 passing yards in the first two games of the preseason.
The safest bet in town is that the Redskins will be drafting in the top five this year and Mike Shanahan will be fired as it turns into an ugly mess all season long for the hapless Skins; they don’t look too good here either.
