Washington Nationals vs. Philadelphia Phillies
The Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies meet on Wednesday for game two of their series in Washington. The Nationals are -145 favorites over the Phillies with an over/under run total set at 8.5.
The Washington Nationals have led the NL East from virtually the start of the season but they did nothing to help their cause on Tuesday as they never got the bats going. Steve Lombardozzi, Michael Morse, and Jesus Flores each had hits but the Nationals failed to score even a run on five hits. On the mound Stephen Strasburg just didn’t have it as he allowed eight hits and six earned runs while striking out three over four innings of work to fall to 11-5 on the season. For Wednesday’s rematch Washington starts Edwin Jackson who his pitching the best he has all season. For the year Jackson has allowed 104 hits and 47 earned runs while striking out 90 over 120.1 innings of work for a 3.52 ERA.
The Philadelphia Phillies were big sellers at the trade deadline on Tuesday but look for them to pack it in. On Tuesday Kevin Frandsen hit a home run as did Jimmy Rollins and Juan Pierre had three hits as the Phillies scored eight runs on 13 hits. On the mound Cliff Lee allowed five hits and struck out seven over seven scoreless innings to go to 2-6 on the year. For Wednesday’s game Philadelphia starts Vance Worley who has won two of his last three decisions. For the season Worley has allowed 109 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 91 over 102 innings of work for a 3.88 ERA.
Washington is 8-2 in their last 10 games, 6-2 in their last eight games against a team with a losing record, and 1-5 in Jackson’s last six starts as a favorite. Philadelphia is 9-24 in their last 33 games against a team with a winning record, 2-11 in their last 13 games as a road underdog, and 1-6 in Worley’s last seven starts against a team with a winning record. Philadelphia is 3-9 in the last 12 meetings of these two.
I like the Nationals in this one and that will be my play.
