Tampa Bay Rays vs. Toronto Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays face off in Toronto on Thursday.  The Rays are -165 favorites over the Blue Jays with an over/under run total set at 8.

The Toronto Blue Jays are having a disappointing season as they haven’t been a factor in any kind of postseason race. The Blue Jays are 2-8 in their last 10 games, 31-30 at home this season, and they are 16.5 games back in the AL East. As a team the Blue Jays are hitting .245 with Edwin Encarnacion hitting .287, Brett Lawrie hitting .282, and Yunel Escobar hitting .252. As a team the Blue Jays pitching staff has an ERA of 4.59 with the starters at 4.81 and the bullpen at 4.18. For game one against the Rays Toronto starts Carlos Villanueva who has lost his last four decisions. For the season Villanueva has allowed 75 hits and 34 earned runs while striking out 94 over 92.2 innings of work for a 3.30 ERA.

The Tampa Bay Rays are in the heart of the Wildcard race in the American League but right now they are on the outside looking in. The Rays are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 36-29 on the road this season, and they are four games back in the AL East and a half of game out in the Wildcard race. As a team the Rays are hitting .236 with Sam Fuld hitting .313, Evan Longoria hitting .293, and Ben Zobrist hitting .267. As a team the Rays pitching staff has an ERA of 3.27 with the starters at 3.48 and the bullpen at 2.81. For game one at Toronto the Rays start Matt Moore who has won his last four decisions. For the season Moore has allowed 133 hits and 60 earned runs while striking out 145 over 150 innings of work for a 3.60 ERA

The Blue Jays are 8-22 in their last 30 games overall, 1-5 in their last six home games, and 1-4 in Villanueva’s last five starts. Tampa Bay is 7-1 in their last eight game one of a series, 11-4 in their last 15 road games, and 1-4 in Moore’s last five starts against a team with a losing record. The Rays have won their last four games in Toronto.

This one shouldn’t see too much scoring and I have it coming in under the total.
