Indianapolis Colts vs. St. Louis Rams
The Indianapolis Colts and the St. Louis Rams face off in Indianapolis on Sunday in their first games of the 2012 NFL Preseason. The Colts are -2 point favorites over the Rams with an over/under point total set at 33.5.
The Indianapolis Colts finished with the worst record in the NFL and after many years of being a regular in the playoffs it will be a rebuilding year this season. Peyton Manning is gone and Andrew Luck takes over and while he has big shoes to fill Luck appears like he could be the right man for the job and he should see plenty of action here along with backups Drew Stanton and Chandler Harnish. Donald Brown is the starter at running back followed by Mewelde Moore and rookie Vick Ballard who passed Delone Carter who had fumbling issues last season. At wide Receiver Reggie Wayne is back as is Austin Collie with LaVon Brazil, Donnie Avery, Griff Whalen, and T.Y. Hilton listed next on the depth chart. Rookie Colby Fleener starts at tight end and he already has a chemistry with Luck and Dwayne Allen starts on the other side in the Colts’ two tight end system. Anthony Castonzo and Winston Justice are the bookend tackles and Samson Satele starts at center. Defensively Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis still get it done as pass rushers and Corey Redding comes in from Baltimore. Also coming over from Baltimore is Tom Zibikowski at safety while Antoine Bethea and Jerraud Powers also comprise part of a secondary where many are likely to get looks.
The St. Louis Rams tied for the worst record in the NFL last year but traded their first round pick for a future boatload of picks which could prove to be the right move for the future. With the Rams passing on Robert Griffin III in the draft it was a vote of confidence for Sam Bradford who has fought injuries but veteran Kellen Clemmons looks to be the backup as Tom Brandstater and Austin Davis battle for the number three spot. Steven Jackson is still the workhorse at running back but rookie Isaiah Pead should play plenty as he looks to need the work with a slow start in camp while Daryl Richardson and Chase Reynolds and others could get carries here. The Rams wide receiver spot should be by committee with Danny Amendola, Brandon Gibson, Brian Quick, Steve Smith, Danario Alexander, Chris Givens, Greg Salas, and Austin Pettis all ready to state their case as St. Louis is 10 deep here due to all of the injuries at this position last year. The Rams also have nine tight ends on the roster so expect battles with Lance kendricks as the starter and Ben Guidugli and Michael Hoomanawanui close behind. The Rams defense looks to be improving and with Chris Long and Robert Quinn they are solid at DE as Michael Brockers was drafted to clog the middle. Jo-Lonn Dunbar was brought in from New Orleans to join James Laurinaitis at linebacker but it is the Rams secondary which could be very good with Cortland Finnegan, Quintin Mikell, and Janoris Jenkins who was easily the best cornerback available in this past year’s NFL draft.
I think in this one we see more of the starters than in most first week preseason games as these teams have a lot to work on and a lot of new faces including new head coaches. The Colts have said that they are acting like these games count but the problem here is they are up against a much better and deeper team.
