Houston Texans vs. San Francisco 49ers
The Houston Texans and the San Francisco 49ers face off on Saturday in Houston for each team’s second preseason NFL game of 2012. The Texans are -3 point favorites over the 49ers with an over/under point total set at 36.
The Houston Texans are one of the early favorites to win the Super Bowl and they got their preseason off to a solid start by beating the Panthers. Matt Shaub saw his first game action since being injured last season and he completed 50 percent of his passes and threw an interception in limited action before T.J. Yates took over and then it was John Beck and Case Keenum. Arian Foster had just one carry going for 11 yards while Ben Tate carried seven times for 38 yards and Jonathan Grimes and Justin Forsett saw the bulk of the action. Owen Daniels had a catch as Garrett Graham led the Texans with three catches and several receivers had two catched including Lestar Jean who caught two passes for a combined 50 yards. Trindon Holliday handled all of the returns including taking a kickoff to the house for a 90 yard touchdown. Defensively Whitney Mercilus and Tim Dobbins had 1.5 sacks as the Texans had seven sacks in all and Troy Nolan had an interception. Overall Houston allowed just 61 rushing yards and 88 passing yards. The Texans were hit hard last season with injuries but I still expect to see more of the first unit this week.
The San Francisco 49ers came within a game of going to the Super Bowl last season and they looked focused on getting to the big game dominating the Vikings in their opening preseason game. QB Alex Smith completed all three passes he threw including one for a touchdown as Scott Tolzien, Colin Kaepernick (who had a 78 yard touchdown run), and Josh Johnson all saw action. Anthony Dixon carried the bulk of the load at running back though Kendall Hunter, Brandon Jacobs, and LaMichael James all had carries in what looks to be a crowded backfield as Frank Gore is the starter. Chris Owusu and Nathan Palmer led the receivers with three catches each while rookie A.J. Jenkins caught two passes and Michael Crabtree caught one and Ted Ginn got the start over Randy Moss. Defensively Eric Bakhtiari had four tackles including two sacks and Perrish Cox had four tackles and an interception but the bigger news was that Aldon Smith was banged up though it appears he will be fine. Overall the Niners’ defense allowed 82 rushing yards and 126 yards passing. Like most teams we’ll get a better look at the first unit this week as San Francisco still has plenty of competition at the skill positions.
This is a possible Super Bowl preview and that means we have deep rosters with not to many positions up for grabs, most of the battles are further down the depth chart and for positioning. I see this one as very close in which case getting points is never a bad thing.
