Green Bay Packers vs. Cleveland Browns
The Green Bay Packers and the Cleveland Browns face off on Thursday in each of their second NFL Preseason games of 2012. The Packers are -4.5 point favorites over the Browns with an over/under point total set at 38.
The Green Bay Packers looked out of sync in their first preseason game where they lost to the Chargers and they are hoping to use it to get better in a hurry. Aaron Rodgers didn’t have his usual timing going just 2 of 8 passing for 16 yards and an interception while Graham Harrell went 15 for 27 for 135 yards and touchdown but at the same time if the Pack need to rely on him at any point this season they will be in trouble. The running game was poor and it lead to the signing of Cedric Benson this week as James Starks averaged 3.2 yards and lost a fumble and Marc Tyler got a long look but he averaged just 2.5 yards per carry. Defensively Anthony Levine and Sean Richardson had five tackles each and Nick Perry had three and a sack as the defense outshined the offense but lost Desmond Bishop to a hamstring injury which looks to be severe at this point. Overall the Packers were outgained 326 yards to 230with the defense allowing 258 yards in the air which is a considerable number for a preseason game. Look for Rodgers to get more time to get more in tune with his receivers and look for Benson to start playing immediately while defensively a lot has to do with exactly where Bishop status falls.
The Cleveland Browns got a win in their first preseason game at Detroit but before they can get too excited they realize their first unit was grossly outplayed and it took a big comeback by the third unit and beyond against players unlikely to be on the Lions roster to get the win. Rookie Brandon Weeden is the starter at QB and he went 3 of 9 for 62 yards while getting sacked and throwing an interception. Adonis Thomas, Chris Obonnya, and Monterio Hardesty all got plenty of carries with limited success as the Brows wait for the ijured top draft pick Trent Richardson to be ready to carry the offense. 14 receivers caught passes with Josh Cooper leading catching three but Travis Benjamin looked impressive and Mohamed Massaquoi left the game injured. Defensively Raymond Ventrone, L.J. Fort, and David Sims led the way with four tackles each and Juqua Parker recorded a sack. The Browns have a lot of work to do and they look to be very far away but we should see more of Weeden in this one.
The Packers have to hope that it’s just first game jitters or rust as they didn’t look good, fortunately they are in luck because despite winning the Browns looked worse. Not loving this game but look for the Packers to look worlds better as the Browns look awful.
