Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds meet on Friday afternoon for game two of their weekend series at Wrigley Field. The Reds are -150 favorites over the Cubs with an over/under run total set at 9.
The Chicago Cubs entered Thursday’s game against the Reds with and eight game losing streak but with some late inning heroics after a rain delayed start they were able to get the win. Alfonso Soriano hit the game winning tow run home run, Anthony Rizzo had two hits, and Starlin Castro drove in two runs as the Cubs scored five runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Chris Volstad allowed six hits and three runs while striking out four over six innings to not factor in the decision as Shawn Camp was te winner and Carlos Marmol earned his 14th save. For Friday’s game Chicago starts Justin Germano who makes his third start of the year. For the season Germano has allowed 12 hits and five earned runs while striking out seven over 13.1 innings of work for a 3.38 ERA.
The Cincinnati Reds still lead the NL Central but they have lost their last five games heading into Friday afternoon’s game. On Thursday Zack Cozart and Todd Frazier hit home runs and Brandon Phillips had three hits as the Reds scored three runs on eight hits in all. On the mound starter Mike Leake allowed six hits and three runs while striking out five over six innings to not factor in the decision while ex-Cub Sean Marshall took the loss when Logan Andrusek allowed the home run to Soriano. For Friday’s game Cincinnati starts Homer Bailey who lost last time out after having no decisions in his two prior starts. For the season Bailey has allowed 146 hits and 60 earned runs while striking out 100 over 135.2 innings of work for a 3.98 ERA.
Chicago is 12-4 in their last 16 home games, 4-1 in their last five games as a road underdog, and 1-8 in their last nine games overall. Cincinnati is 9-3 in their last 12 games as a road favorite, 0-5 in their last five games against the NL Central, and 6-1 in Bailey’s last seven starts. Cincinnati is 4-0 in Bailey’s last four starts against Cincinnati.
This could be one of the windiest days of the year in Chicago with 40 mph + winds and that is going to be a factor but the biggest factor here is the Reds are simply the better team.
