Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs

The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs meet on Monday for game one of their series at PNC Park.  The Pirates are -150 favorites over the Cubs with an over/under run total set at 8.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are red hot and they are looking to prove their doubters wrong as they are thinking post season. The Pirates are 7-3 in their last 10 games, 32-14 at home this season, and they are a half game back in the NL Central but lead the national League Wildcard race. As a team the Pirates are hitting .247 with Andrew McCutchen at .372, Neil Walker at .297, and Garrett Jones at .267. As a team the Pirates pitching staff has an ERA of 3.53with the starters at 4.00 and the bullpen at 2.63. For game one against the Cubs Pittsburgh starts Erik Bedard who won last time out to end a personal streak of four losing decisions. For the season Bedard has allowed 98 hits and 47 earned runs while striking out 82 over 93 innings for a 4.55 ERA.

The Chicago Cubs are undergoing a building process but they still appear to be in the breaking down stage. The Cubs are 6-4 in their last 10 games, 14-35 on the road this year, and 16.5 games back in the NL Central. As a team the Cubs are hitting .248 with Anthony Rizzo hitting .329, Jeff Baker hitting .289, and Bryan LaHair hitting .282. As a team the Cubs pitching staff has an ERA of 4.34 with the starters at 4.18 and the bullpen at 4.64. For game one against the Pirates Chicago starts Jeff Samardzjia who has lost five of his last six decisions. For the season Samardzjia has allowed 107 hits and 54 earned runs while striking out 109 over 106.1 innings of work for a 4.57 ERA.

Pittsburgh is 5-0 in their last five games overall, 24-6 in their last 30 home games, and 1-5 in Bedard’s last six starts. Chicago is 4-0 in their last four games against a left handed starter, 16-42 in their last 58 road games, and 1-5 in Samardzjia’s last six road starts. Chicago is 1-5 in their last six meetings of these two.

The total in this one is set at eight and that isn’t going to be an issue as it sails over.
