Philadelphia Eagles Preview
Overview: Few teams had bigger expectations in 2011 than the Philadelphia Eagles and the results were the equivalent to them falling flat on their faces. The Eagles were beat on early and often in 2011 and their 8-8 record was a huge disappointment considering all of the names they added and what they had done in previous years. The Eagles have parted ways with some of the big names, have added some new faces, and look to get back on track in one of football’s toughest divisions and Andy Reid still hunts for that elusive Super Bowl win.
Offense: Michael Vick just hasn’t shown durability and while when he is on the field he is one of the most exciting players in the game Philadelphia needs to let him play instinctively and that isn’t just where he is at his best but he also has the best chances to remain on the field. DeSean Jackson is one of the most exciting players in the game and Jeremy Maclin is a playmaker as well and Damaris Johnson is a natural fit with these two and a formidable weapon for Vick to throw to. Brett Celek returns at tight end but there is little behind him. LeSean McCoy can carry the offense himself but the Eagles have some of the most intriguing backups at RB in the NFL with Dion Lewis, Chris Polk, and Bryce Brown all being guys with huge reputations in the college ranks. At this point the Eagles O-line is a bit of a question mark with Jason Peters gone for the year but Philly picked up a Demetress Bell in hopes he can fill the void.
Defense: Nnamdi Asomugha hardly looked like the savior last season and with his counterpart Asante Samuel gone look for even less balls to be thrown his way as Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is just awful and while Brandon Boykin should be the starter, he is a rookie and will be tested. The Eagles made a nice trade for DeMeco Ryans who was a tackling machine for the Texans and he just has a nose for the football. Mike Patterson is a mainstay in the middle and while I didn’t like the Fletcher Cox pick in the draft I did think they got a steal in Vinny Curry. Like a lot of teams the Eagles defense will dictate if this is a playoff team or a team that will disappoint once again.
