The Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers face off on Thursday in the rubber match of their three game series in Cleveland. The Tigers are -180 favorites over the Indians with an over/under run total set at 7.5.
The Cleveland Indians won on Tuesday but on Wednesday they just looked out gunned falling to the Tigers. Casey Kotchman had two hits including a home run, Travis Hafner homered, and Michael Brantley had a hit as the Indians scored three runs on five hits for the night. On the mound Derek Lowe allowed eight hits and five runs, four of them earned, over six innings to drop his recird to 8-9 on the year. For Thursday’s game Cleveland starts Zach McAllister who is coming off of his first loss since early May. For the season McAllister has allowed 52 hits and 20 earned runs while striking out 52 over 56 innings of work for a 3.21 ERA.
The Detroit Tigers got out to an early lead on Wednesday and made it work as they took game two of the series. Quintin Berry had three hits and Miguel Cabrera, Austin Jackson, and Delmon Young all had hits as the Tigers scored five runs on eight hits. On the mound Max Scherzer allowed three hits and two earned runs while striking out eight over seven innings to elevate his record to 10-5 and Jose Valverde earned his 19th save. For Thursday’s game Detroit goes with their ace, Justin Verlander, who has won six of his last seven decisions. For the season Verlander has allowed 103 hits and 40 earned runs while striking out 142 over 148.2 innings of work for a 2.42 ERA.
Cleveland is 4-1 in their last five home games as an underdog, 17-5 in their last 22 home games against Detroit, and 5-2 in McAllister’s last seven starts. Detroit is 5-1 in their last six road games against a right handed starter, 3-5 in their last eight games as a road favorite, and 38-13 in Verlander’s last 51 starts. Detroit is 10-3 in Veralnder’s last 13 starts against Cleveland.
