Cincinnati Reds vs. San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres and the Cincinnati Reds meet on Thursday for game one of their series at Petco Park.  The Reds are -145 favorites over the Padres with an over/under run total set at 6.5.

The San Deigo Padres are lookingto avoid having the worst record in baseball this season as they have been hovering around that mark most of the season. The Padres have won five games in a row, are 16-24 at home this season, and they are 13 games back in the N.L. West standings. As a team the Padres are hitting .233 with Carlos Quentin hitting .289, Chase Headley hitting .271, and Yonder Alonso hitting .257. As a team the Padres pitching staff has an ERA of 3.87 with the starters at 3.96 and the bullpen at 3.68. For game one of their series against the Reds San Diego starts Edinson Volquez who was traded to the Padres from the Reds before the season. For the year Volquez has allowed 80 hits and 41 earned runs while striking out 88 over 100.1 innings of work for a 3.68 ERA.

The Cincinnati Reds are in a dog fight in the N.L. Central and every game is going to have a lot of meaning for them this year. The Reds are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 21-21 on the road this season, and they are a game back in the N.L. Central. As a team the Reds are hitting .249 with Joey Votto hitting .350, Brandon Phillips hitting .279, and Jay Bruce hitting .256. As a team the Reds pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.46 with the starters at 3.79 and the bullpen at 2.70. For game one against the Padres Cincinnati starts mat Latos who was traded from San Diego earlier this year. For the season Latos has allowed 92 hits and 48 earned runs while striking out 90 over 97.2 innings of work for a 4.42 ERA.

San Diego is 31-62 in their last 93 games as an underdog, 2-6 in their last eight home games, and 0-4 in Volquez’s last four starts against a team with a winning record. Cincinnati is 35-17 in their last 52 games as a favorite, 7-1 in Latos’ last eight starts, and 3-7 in their last 10 games in San Diego. The Reds have won five of the last seven meetings of these two.

This should be a good one but the total is set way too low at 6.5 and I look for this one to go over.
