Tampa Bay Rays vs. Detroit Tigers
The Tampa Bay Rays and the Detroit Tigers meet for game two of their series at Tropicana Field. The Tigers are -130 favorites over the Rays with an over/under run total set at 6.5.
The Tampa Bay Rays have now lost four games in a row and have slid into fourth place in the A.L. East standings with their loss on Thursday. Brooks Conrad had two hits, Elliot Johnson had two hits, and Jeff Keppinger and Ben Zobrist each had hits as the Rays scored twice on six hits. On the mound James Shields was ounded for 14 hits but allowed just four runs while striking out six over 7.2 innings of work to take his fifth loss of the year. For Friday’s game Tampa Bay starts David Price who is having an All Star type season. For the year Price has allowed 88 hits and 32 earned runs while striking out 90 over 97.2 innings of work for a 2.95 ERA
The Detroit Tigers have had their share of struggles on their road trip but on Thursday they started their series in Tampa Bay off with a win. Miguel Cabrera had four hits and a home run, Austin Jackson had four hits, and Delmon Young had two hits as the Tigers scored five runs on 15 hits. On the mound Max Scherzer allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out seven over six innings for his seventh win of the year and Jose Valverde earned his 14th save. For Friday’s game Detroit starts their ace, Justin Verlander, who has won his last three starts. For the season Verlander has allowed 86 hits and 33 earned runs while striking out 113 over 117.2 innings of work for a 2.52 ERA.
Tampa Bay is 2-7 in their last nine games overall, 2-8 in their last 10 game two of a series, and 4-1 in Price’s last five starts. Detroit is 3-6 in their last nine games against the A.L. East, 1-7 in their last eight road games against a left handed starter, and 19-7 in Verlander’s last 26 road starts. Detroit is 102 in the last 12 meetings of these two.
The total here is set low at 6.5 but I still see this one being a playoff style pitcher’s duel that stays under the number.
