Philadelphia Phillies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

The Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers battle it out on Monday in Philadelphia.  The Dodgers are -125 favorites over the Phillies with an over/under run total set at 7.

The Philadelphia Phillies have yet to be able to get it into gear this season but even so they are very much in the mix in the very tight N.L. East. The Phillies are 6-4 in their last 10 games, 12-15 at home this season, and in last place in the division standings but just 3.5 games off the pace. As a team the Phillies are hitting .270 with Carlos Ruiz at .371, Placido Polanco at .290, and Hunter Pence at .269. As a team the Phillies pitching staff has an ERA of 3.82 with the starters at 3.54 and the bullpen at 4.57. For game one against the Dodgers Philadelphia starts Vance Worley who is coming off of the D.L. For the season Worley has allowed 44 hits and 15 earned runs while striking out 45 over 44 innings of work for a 3.07 ERA.

The Los Angeles Dodgers entered last week with the best record in baseball but with Matt Kemp going back on the 15 D.L. after a failed comeback the Dodgers are slumping badly. The Dodgers are 3-7 in their last 10 games, 12-12 on the road this season, and still have a three game lead in the N.L. West. As a team the Dodgers are hitting .272 with Andre Ethier hitting .320, A.J. Ellis hitting .315, and James Loney hitting .248. As a team the Dodgers pitching staff has an ERA of 3.29 with the starters at 3.16 and the bullpen at 3.57. For game Monday’s game Los Angeles starts Clayton Kershaw who hasn’t gotten a lot of support this season. For the year Kershaw has allowed 55 hits and 20 earned runs while striking out 64 over 74.1 innings of work for a 2.42 ERA.

Philadelphia is 7-4 in their last 11 games overall, 2-6 in their last eight home games, and 9-3 in Worley’s last 12 starts. Los Angeles is 21-8 in their last 29 games against a team with a winning record, 1-6 in their last seven games overall, and 7-2 in Kershaw’s last nine starts as a road favorite. Los Angeles is 9-24 in the last 33 meetings of these two.

Kershaw has had horrible results against the Phillies but I think he gets past them here against this year’s version of the Phillies.
