Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago Cubs

The Minnesota Twins and the Chicago Cubs close out their three game series at Target Field on Sunday.  The Twins are -130 favorites over the Cubs with an over/under run total set at 8.

It’s been all Minnesota Twins for this interleague series as they have dominated in the first two games. On Saturday Joe Mauer had three hits and Denard Span, Ben Revere, and Justin Mourneau had two hits as the Twins scored 11 runs on 16 hits. On the mound Scott Diamond scattered seven hits while striking out five over six scoreless innings to earn his fifth win of the season. For Sunday’s game Minnesota starts Francisco Liriano who has won just once this season. For the year Liriano has allowed 51 hits and 33 earned runs while striking out 47 over 46 innings of work for a 6.46 ERA.

The Chicago Cubs are an outright mess as they are on another four game losing streak and have the worst record in baseball. )n Saturday Alfonso Soriano had a home run and two hits and Darwin Barney, Reed Johnson, and Ian Stewart all had two hits as the Cubs scored three runs on 11 hits. On the mound Jeff Samardzjia didn’t have his best stuff as he allowed nine hits and eight earned runs while lasting just 3.2 innings to take his fourth loss of the year. For Sunday’s game Chicago starts Ryan Dempster who has pitched well but has gotten little support all year. For the season Dempster has allowed 52 hits and 19 earned runs while striking out 57 over 66 innings of work for a 2.59 ERA.

Minnesota is 5-1 in their last six games as a home favorite, 42-14 in their last 56 interleague games, and 1-5 in Liriano’s last six starts. Chicago is 20-44 in their last 44 games overall, 8-24 in their last 32 interleague games, and 5-14 in Dempster’s last 19 starts. Chicago is 1-7 in the last eight meetings of these two.

The Twins are favored here and as bad as the Cubs are and as bad of luck as Dempster has had I like the Cubbies to get a very rare win here.
