Colorado Rockies vs. Washington Nationals
The Colorado Rockies and the Washington Nationals return to N.L. play on Monday as they face off in Colorado. The Nationals are -180 favorites over the Rockies with an over/under run total set at 9.5.
The Colorado Rockies aren’t having a good year and while they looked directionless coming into the season they haven’t done anything to move the team forward. The Rockies are 3-7 in their last 10 games, 15-21 at home this season, and they are 15 games back in the N.L. West. As a team the Rockies are hitting .266 with Carlos Gonzalez hitting .328, Marco Scutaro hitting .278, and Dexter Fowler hitting .274. As a team the Rockies pitching staff has an ERA of 5.34 with the starters at 6.35 and the bullpen at 3.91. For game one in their return home Colorado starts Jeff Francis who makes his fourth start of the season. For the year Francis has allowed 24 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out six over 13.2 innings of work for an 8.56 ERA.
The Washington Nationals have cooled off of late but they continue the lead the N.L. East. The Nationals are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 21-15 on the road this season, and they have a three game lead in the division. As a team the Nationals are hitting .238 with Bryce Harper hitting .286, Ian Desmond at .263, and Adam LaRoche at .251. As a team the Nationals pitching staff has an ERA of 2.97 with the starters at 2.98 and the bullpen at 2.94. For game one against the Rockies Washington starts Stephen Strasburg who has won his last six starts in a row. For the season Strasburg has allowed 65 hits and 23 earned runs while striking out 110in 84 innings of work for a 2.46 ERA.
Colorado is 3-14 in their last 17 games overall, 2-9 in their last 11 games against the N.L. East, and 1-4 in Francis’ last five home starts. Washington is 6-1 in their last seven games as a favorite, 7-3 in their last 10 road games, and 20-6 in Strasburg’s last 26 starts. Washington is 6-16 in their last 22 games in Colorado.
While Francis gave up a lot of runs in his first start he is improving and I look for this one to come in under the total.
