Chicago Cubs vs. New York Mets

The New York Mets take to the road to face the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.  The Mets are -135 favorites over the Cubs with an over/under run total set at 9.

The Mets have proven to be a team that simply won’t go away and that has gotten them second place in the National League East. The one concern for this team is they can be streaky as hey have won three, lost three and than won for more before a 6-5 defeat to the Yankees on Sunday has given the NYM back to back defeats. What this team does going forward is any bodies guess but when this team wins both the pitching and hitting are producing. The pitching wasn’t good as RA Dickey finally proved to be human with five runs allowed on five hits and three free passes but Miguel Batista took the loss with a run allowed over two innings. The bats presented a quality attack with eleven hits but all were singles with Andres Torres and Ruben Tejada driving in two runs each. A hot Johan Santana has won four of his last five starts which includes three victories via the shut out. Santana is having a solid year after surgery robbed him of his entire 2011 season with 84 strike outs in 84 innings.

The Cubs certainly are not going to contend for the top spot in the National League Central and it will take a very strong year going forward just to escape the division basement as they are fighting to shed the label as the worse team in the game. After a 5-1 defeat at Arizona on Sunday saddled the team with four consecutive losses and defeats in eight of eleven overall as neither the arms or bats have had strong seasons up to this point. That trend continued Sunday although starter Matt Garza gave up a competitive three runs in seven frames before Matt Corpas allowed two runs without recording an out. The offense didn’t give Garza much of a chance with a mere five hits with a pair of free passes. The Cubs hand the ball to Travis Wood to open the series as he hopes to build on his first victory of the year. Wood defeated the White Sox 2-1 with one run given up on four hits and four walks over six frames.

Santana is the class of the match up on the mound but Wood is capable. The question is whether the streaky Mets can get back in the win column and the way the Cubs struggle against left handers I’ll back the visitors.
