Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox meet for game three of their series at Wrigley Field on Sunday Night Baseball. The Red Sox are -120 favorites over the Cubs with an over/under run total set at 8.5.
This season has been a struggle for the Chicago Cubs as they have the worst record in baseball and they did nothing to help their cause as they lost on Saturday to the Red Sox. On Saturday Luis Valbuena hit a home run, Jeff Baker had two hits, and Starlin Castro had a hit as the Cubs scored three runs on eight hits in all. On the mound Jeff Samardzjia allowed four hits and three earned runs while striking out six over 5.1 innings of work to take his fifth loss of the year. For Sunday’s series finale Chicago starts Paul Maholm who has lost his last three decisions. For the season Maholm has allowed 67 hits and 36 earned runs while striking out 43 over 66 innings of work for a 4.91 ERA.
The Boston Red Sox continue to reside in last place in the A.L. East and even with their win on Saturday all they managed to do was not lose any more ground to the division leading Yankees. Jarrod Saltalamacchia had two hits including a home run and Scott Podsednik and Mike Aviles had two hits each as the Red Sox scored four runs on eight hits. Jon Lester allowed seven hits and three earned runs while striking out eight over 6.2 innings and Alfredo Aceves earned his 16th save. For Sunday’s game Boston starts Frankilin Morales who starts for the first time since 2009 after working mostly out of the bullpen. For the season Morales has allowed 21 hits and eight earned runs while striking out 20 over 23.2 innings of work for a 3.04 ERA.
Chicago is 6-15 in their last 21 against the A.L. East, 4-12 in their last 16 interleague games, and 1-5 in Maholm’s last six starts. Boston is 5-1 in their last six games against the N.L. Central, 6-2 in their last eight interleague road games against a team with a losing record, and 4-8 in their last 12 games overall.
The total looks to be a little light here and for my play I will go with the over.
