Baltimore Orioles vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles match up at Camden Yards in interleague action. The Orioles are -150 favorites over the Pirates with an over/under run total set at 8.5.
Surging Pittsburgh has done the unexpected by taking over the top spot in the National League Central following a 3-2 victory over Kansas City which not only gave them a sweep of the Royals but four straight wins and victories in eight of ten overall. Strong pitching has been leading the way with some occasional offensive punch mixed in. However, Sunday’s win was typical Pirates with good pitching and just enough scoring to carry the day. Starter AJ Burnett allowed two runs on five hits over 7.1 innings to win his sixth while the offense made the most of five hits. Andrew McCutchen was the star at the plate with a two run homer and a run scoring double. Brad Lincoln gets the starting nod for Pittsburgh for the second straight time and third on the year. Lincoln has been used in relief and comes off a poor start that saw him allow five runs on six hits over four innings of a 5-4 loss to Cincinnati.
Baltimore has suffered through a bit of a slowdown over the past few weeks and it’s cost them dearly as they’ve gone from first to third in the American League East. The Orioles defeated Philadelphia 5-4 on Sunday for consecutive victories as the team has been playing .500 ball over the last ten contests. Nether the pitching or hitting has been consistent but Sunday’s come from behind win hopefully provides a spark after coming back from a 4-1 hole to win in ten frames. Jason Hammel had an uneven start with four runs given up on six hits and four walks over six innings. Steve Tolleson smacked a three run bomb in the fourth while Matt Weiters doubled in the game winner in the bottom of the tenth to give the Birds their ninth straight extra inning victory. Wei-Yin Chen has been one of Baltimore’s most reliable starters until recently when he has been a bit erratic over his last four outings. Chen will be fine if he can duplicate his last outing when he gave up one run on seven hits over seven frames of a 2-1 win over Boston.
This game to me boils down to whether we believe Baltimore will get to Lincoln who appears to be better suited to pitching in relief. Ill go with Baltimore here.
