Baltimore Orioles vs. Los Angeles Angels

The Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Angels meet on Tuesday for game one of their series at Camden Yards.  The Angels are -170 favorites over the Orioles with an overt/under run total set at 9.

The Baltimore Orioles are the current leaders in the A.L. Wildcard race but they are far from out of it in the A.L. East race as well. The Orioles are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 21-15 at home this season, and they are 2.5 games behind the Yankees in the division race. As a team the orioles are hitting .246 with Adam Jones at .300, Chris Davis at .272, and Nick Markakis at .256. As a team the Orioles pitching staff has an ERA of 3.67 with the starters 4.42 and the bullpen at 2.30. For game one of this series Baltimore starts Brian Matusz who has lost four of his last five starts including his last three in a row. For the season Matusz has allowed 87 hits and 42 earned runs while striking out 59 over 75.2 innings of work for a 5.00 ERA.

The Los Angeles Angels are making a move in the Wildcard standings and in the A.L. West and after a bad start a right back in the middle of the post season race. The Angels are 7-3 in their last 10 games, 18-16 on the road this season, and they are five games behind the Rangers in the standings. As a team the Angels are hitting .261 with Mike Trout hitting .338, Mark Trumbo hitting .316. Howard Kendrick hitting .269, and Albert Pujols hitting .259. As a team the Angels pitching staff has an ERA of 3,42 with the starters at 3.56 and the bullpen at 3.10. For game one against the Orioles Los Angeles starts C.J. Wilson who has won his last four decisions. For the Season Wilson has allowed 67 hits and 25 earned runs while striking out 79 over 92.1 innings of work for a 2.44 ERA.

Baltimore is 7-0 in their last seven home games against a left handed starter, 13-3 in their last 16 games following an off day, and 6-18 in Matusz’s last 24 starts. Los Angeles is 11-1 in their last 12 road games, 4-1 in their last five against the A.L. East, and 6-0 in Wilson’s last six starts. Los Angeles is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings of these two.

Both of these teams are playing well and while I give the Angels the nod on the mound, Baltimore is just a value here.
