Tampa Bay Rays vs. Toronto Blue Jays
The Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays meet on Wednesday for game three of their series at Tropicana Field. The Rays are -120 favorites over the Blue Jays with an over/under run total set at 7.5 runs.
The Tampa Bay Rays have been playing well this season and while they aren’t overpowering anyone they are steadily winning games at a pace that would land them in the post season. On Tuesday Luke Scott had two hits including a solo home run, Carlos Pena hot a three run home run, and B.J. Upton homered as they Rays scored eight runs on 14 hits. On the mound Matt Moore allowed three hits and four runs while striking out six over 4.2 innings to not factor into the decision as Wade Davis got the win and Fernando Rodney earned his 14th save. For Wednesday’s game Tampa Bay starts James Shields who has lost two of his last three decisions. For the season Shields has allowed 57 hits and 25 earned runs while striking out 56 over 59.2 innings of work for a 3.77 ERA.
The Toronto Blue Jays have been very string this year but on Tuesday they didn’t have enough to match the Rays. On Tuesday Yan Gomes hit a solo home run, Jose Bautista had three hits, and Brett Lawrie had a hit as the Blue Jays had seven hits and scored five runs. On the mound Drew Hutchison allowed seven hits and six earned runs while striking out three over four innings to take his second loss of the year. For Wednesday’s game Toronto starts Ricky Romero who has emerged as one of the elite pitchers in all of baseball. For the season Romero has allowed 46 hits and 24 earned runs while striking out 42 over 59.1 innings of work for a 3.64 ERA.
The Rays are 39-17 in their last 56 home games, 0-5 in their last five games against a left handed starter, and 7-2 in Shields’ last nine starts. Toronto is 5-2 in their last seven games overall, 3-8 in their last 11 games against the A.L. East, and 2-5 in Romero’s last seven starts as a road underdog. Toronto is 1-5 in the last six meetings of these two.
With two big game pitchers facing off this one looks to be a strong candidate for the under and that will be my play.
