Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays meet for game two of their series in Boston.  The Red Sox are -135 favorites over the Red Sox with an over/under run total set at 8.5.

It’s clear that the Red Sox and the Rays really don’t like one another but it wasn’t enough to inspire the Red Sox as they dropped game one of the series. Adrian Gonzalez, Kevin Youklis, Marlon Byrd, and Scott Podsednik each had a hit as the Red Sox had four hits and scored four runs in all. On the mound Jon Lester allowed six hits and seven earned runs while striking out four over four innings for his fourth loss of the year. For Saturday’s game Boston starts Josh Beckett who has won his last two starts allowing a combined one run. For the season Beckett has allowed 48 hits and 24 earned runs while striking out 40 over 49.1 innings of work for a 4.38 ERA.

The Tampa Bay Rays weren’t intimidated one bit by Boston on Friday as the rivalry did nothing but heat up. Matt Joyce had two hits including a grand slam home run, Elliot Johnson hit a two run home run, and Carlos Pena hit a solo home run as the Rays scored seven runs on eight hits. On the mound Alex Cobb allowed three hits and one earned run over five innings for his second win of the year and Fernando Rodney earned his 15th save. For Saturday’s game Tampa Bay starts David Price who has lost two of his last three starts. For the season Price has allowed 54 hits and 19 earned runs while striking out 52 over 59.1 innings of work for a 2.88 ERA.

Boston is 7-2 in their last nine games as a favorite, 5-2 in their last seven home games against a left handed starter, and 11-4 in Beckett’s last 15 home starts. Tampa Bay is 7-2 in their last nine games against the A.L. East, 18-7 in their last 25 games against a right handed starter, and 7-3 in Price’s last 10 road starts. Boston is 5-1 in Beckett’s last six home starts against Tampa Bay.

This should be a good one with two front line pitchers and as hard as it is to believe emotion would be an issue I think it is for Boston here and I look for the Rays to get the win.
