Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox meet the Tampa Bay Rays as they begin their weekend series at Fenway Park on Friday.  The Red Sox are -165 favorites over the Rays with an over/under run total set at 9.

The Boston Red Sox have picked up their play of late but it hasn’t resulted in any movement up the standings in the American League East. The Red Sox are 7-3 in their last 10 games, 9-11 at home this season, and they are in last place in the division, 5.5 games behind the leaders. As a team the Red Sox are hitting .273 with David Ortiz hitting .315, Dustin Pedroia hitting .296, and Mike Aviles at .271. As a team the Red Sox pitching staff has an ERA of 4.64 with the starters at 5.10 and the bullpen at 3.80. For game one against the Rays Boston starts Jon Lester who has won his last two starts. For the season Lester has allowed 55 hits and 25 earned runs while striking out 37 over 57 innings of work for a 3.95 ERA.

The Tampa Bay Rays are once again among the leaders in the American League as despite missing Evan Longoria Joe Maddon continues to prove why he is among the best managers in the game. The Rays are 6-4 in their last 10 games, 10-11 on the road this season and they are a game out of the lead in the A.L. East standings. As a team the Rays are hitting .246 with Matt Joyce hitting .274, Sean Rodriguez hitting .246, and Luke Scott hitting .243. As a team the Rays pitching staff has an ERA of 3.54 with the starters at 3.49 and the bullpen at 3.65. For game one at Fenway Park Tampa Bay starts Alex Cobb who won his first start of the year. In his only outing Cobb allowed six hits and two runs while striking out six over seven innings for a 2.57 ERA.

Boston is 7-1 in their last eight games against a right handed starter, 4-1 in their last five games overall, and 4-9 in Lester’s last 13 starts. Tampa Bay is 6-2 in their last eight games against the A.L. East, 14-5 in their last 19 games following a win, and 105 in their last six games against a left handed starter. Boston is 4-2 in the six games played between these two already this season.

The Rays are getting nice odds here and with them being the better overall team it is well worth a shot taking them here.
