New York Yankees vs. Kansas City Royals

The New York Yankees host the Kansas City Royals on Monday in a meeting of fourth place teams.  The Yankees are -175 favorites over the Royals with an over/under run total set at 9.5.

The New York Yankees have struggled of late and are sinking in the A.L. East standings. The Yankees are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 12-10 at home this season, and they are 5.5 games behind the Orioles in the race for the division. As a team the Yankees are hitting .267 led by Derek Jeter at .347, Robinson Cano at .309, and Alex Rodriguez at .270. As a team the Yankees pitching staff has an ERA of 4.14 with the starters at 4.96 and the bullpen at 2.58. For game one against the Royals New York starts Hiroki Kuroda who has struggled since making the move to the American League. For the season Kuroda has allowed 52 hits and 24 earned runs while striking out 30 over 48 innings for an ERA of 4.50.

The Kansas City Royals are one of baseball’s biggest disappointments this year and while they seem ready to get going they haven’t been able to maintain any type of positive momentum thus far. The Royals are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 11-7 on the road this season, and they are 6.5 games back in the A.L. Central. As a team the Royals are hitting .259 with Billy Butler hitting .297, Mike Moustakas hitting .296, and Alcides Escobar hitting .296. As a team the Royals pitching staff has an ERA of 4.39 with the starters at 5.19 and the bullpen at 3.35. For game one in the Bronx Kansas City starts Felipe Paulino who always seems loaded with talent yet never seems to be able to convert that to wins. For the year Paulino has allowed 16 hits and four earned runs while striking out 21 over 18.2 innings of work for a 1.93 ERA.

New York is 8-2 in their last 10 game one of a series, 7-3 in their last 10 games against a team with a losing record, and 0-4 in Kuroda’s last four starts with four days of rest. Kansas City is 4-0 in their last four road games, 8-19 in their last 27 games against the A.L. East, and 2-5 in Paulino’s last seven starts as an underdog. Kansas City is 10-37 in their last 47 games in New York.

The Yankees are struggling and they look to be in trouble and Kuroda hasn’t looked like part of the solution so taking the Royals at the big price seems to be worth taking a shot on.
