Detroit Tigers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
The Detroit Tigers and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet on Sunday for game three of their three game series at Comerica Park. The Tigers are -175 favorites over the Pirates with an over/under run total set at 8.5.
After winning on Friday the Detroit Tigers lost on Saturday to the Pirates. On Saturday Prince Fielder had two hits including a two run home run and Miguel Cabrera, Delmon Young, and Brennan Boesch all had two hits as the Tigers scored three time so 10 hits. On the mound Drew Smyly allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out six over 4.2 innings to take his first loss of the year. For Sunday’s game the Tigers go with Max Scherzer who has had two no decisions and a win in his last three starts. For the season Scherzer has allowed 54 hits and 29 earned runs while striking out 48 over 41.2 innings of work for a 6.26 ERA.
The Pittsburgh Pirates once against showed that they are capable of winning games as they beat the Tigers in Detroit on Saturday. Andrew McCutchen hit two home runs and had four RBI’s, Neil Walker had two hits, and Jose Tabata added a hit as the Pirates scored four runs on nine hits in all. On the mound A.J. Burnett allowed seven hits and two runs striking out two over seven innings to earn his second win of the season and Joel Hanrahan earned his ninth save of the year. For Sunday’s game Pittsburgh starts Kevin Correia who has lost his last four starts. For the season Correia has allowed 38 hits and 20 earned runs while striking out 14 over 40 innings of work for a 4.50 ERA.
Detroit is 36-18 in their last 54 games against the N.L. Central, 43-14 in their last 57 interleague home games, and 15-7 in Scherzer’s last 22 home starts. Pittsburgh is 18-36 in their last 54 games against the A.L. Central, 9-47 in their last 56 interleague road games, and 0-4 in Correia’s last four starts. Pittsburgh is 1-4 in their last five games in Detroit.
These are pretty big odds for Scherzer who has been erratic thus far and that makes him unplayable. This isn’t a game I will be playing a side on but forced to make a choice I would take the Pirates and the odds.
