After losing 12 games in a row the Chicago Cubs now have a chance to sweep a three game series for themselves in they can beat the Padres on Wednesday. On Tuesday Alfonso Soriano hit a home run and Joe Mather and Darwin Barney each had two hits as the Cubs scored five times on 10 hits. On the mound Jeff Samardzjia allowed eight hits and three runs while striking out eight over seven innings for his fifth win of the season and James Russell earned his first save. For Wednesday’s game Chicago starts Ryan Dempster who is still looking for his first win this year. For the season Dempster has allowed 43 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 50 over 54.2 innings of work for a 2.14 ERA.
The San Diego Padres are losing their way towards the worst record in baseball as they lost again on Tuesday. Carlos Quentin had three hits including a home run, Everth Cabrera had two hits, and Will Venable had a hit as the Padres scored three runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Eric Stults allowed seven hits and four runs over 6.1 innings to take his first loss as a member of the Padres. For Wednesday’s game San Diego starts Anthony Bass who lost last time out. For the season Bass has allowed 51 hits and 23 earned runs while striking out 55 over 58.1 innings of work for a 3.55 ERA.
Chicago is 2-5 in their last seven games as a home favorite, 1-8 in their last nine games against a right handed starter, and 0-5 in Dempster’s last five home starts. San Diego is 1-5 in their last six road games against a right handed starter, 0-5 in their last five games against the N.L. Central, and 3-7 in Bass’ last 10 starts.
