Chicago Cubs vs. Atlanta Braves
The Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves meet for game two of their series at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are -115 favorites over the Braves with an over/under run total set at 8.
It was a tough start to the year for the Chicago Cubs but as we saw on Monday the further the season seems to go the more answers the Cubs seem to find. On Monday Bryan LaHair hit a solo home run, Ian Stewart hit a solo home run, and Geovany Soto had two hits including a two run home run that iced the win as the Cubs had nine hits and scored five runs in all. On the mound Jeff Samardzjia had his second strong outing in a row as he allowed five hits and a run while striking out seven over seven innings of work for his fourth win of the year. For game two against the Braves Chicago starts Ryan Dempster who has pitched very well but he has yet to get a win this year. For the season Dempster has allowed 14 hits and three earned runs while striking out 29 over 28.1 innings of work for a 0.95 ERA.
The Atlanta Braves didn’t seem to have their best stuff on Monday Night and what they had just wasn’t enough to get the win. Jason Heyward hit a solo home run, Chipper Jones had two hits, and Tyler Pastornicky had two hits as the Braves scored one run on two hits for the game. On the mound Tommy Hanson allowed five hits and two runs striking out three over six innings for his third loss of the year but he took his third loss of the year. For Tuesday’s rematch Atlanta starts Randall Delgado who has lost his last three starts. For the season Delgado has allowed 29 hits and 16 earned runs while striking out 26 over 28 innings of work for a 5.14 ERA.
Chicago is 6-2 in their last eight games as a favorite, 2-7 in their last nine game two of a series, and 0-5 in Dempster’s last six starts. Atlanta is 7-1 in their last eight game two of a series, 6-2 in their last eight games against a right handed starter, and 3-13 in their last 16 games as a road underdog. Chicago is 0-4 in Dempster’s last four starts against Atlanta.
Dempster has put up huge numbers this season and has had some rough luck but in this one I see him reverting back to form as the Braves get the win in a higher scoring game.
