Boston Red Sox vs. Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox conclude their series at Fenway on Thursday. The Red Sox are -140 favorites over the Tigers with an over/under run total set at 9.5.
After dropping a 6-4 decision to Boston on Thursday, Detroit is still in the third spot in the American League Central but are four games below .500 which is a concern. The Tigers have now dropped three in a row with neither the offense or pitching standing out. It was more of the same Wednesday as starter Drew Smyly gave up four runs on four hits in six frames. The offense produced plenty of base runners and a pair of bases on balls. Miguel Cabrera doubled in a run while a sacrifice fly and two RBI ground outs accounted for the scoring. The Tigers send Max Scherzer to the bump in the series finale’ looking for more consistency. Scherzer has won three of his last four decisions after finding a flaw in his delivery which has led to 24 strikeouts in the past 12.1 frames.
After Wednesday’s victory over Detroit it appears that Boston is hot again bu the question is how long will the good times last and can they avoid lengthy skids going forward that have had the team running in sand for most of 2012. The work on the mound and at the plate has been on the same page which is a positive sign and one that continued Wednesday although it was the offense that bailed out Jon Lester who allowed four runs on ten hits in 6.2 innings while striking out seven. The offense used a power surge to carry the day with three of their 12 hits leaving the yard. Will Middlebrooks and David Ortiz hit two run bombs while Kevin Youkilis went solo. Josh Beckett toes the rubber Thursday hoping to continue his hot string of starts. In three consecutive outings, Beckett has gone at least seven innings in which he has allowed three runs while whiffing 19.
The situation I find myself looking at here is that Boston is hot but has not been a great team for most of 2012 and Detroit is terrible. Whatever happens here won’t surprise me but right now I’m taking the plus odds.
