Atlanta Braves vs. Washington Nationals
The Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals meet on Sunday as the Braves look to avoid getting swept at home. The Braves are -140 favorites over the Nationals with an over/under run total set at 6.5.
The Atlanta Braves were in first place in the N.L. East just a week ago but after six consecutive losses they have quickly slipped to fourth place in the division. On Saturday Dan Uggla hit a two run home run, Juan Francisco had three hits, and Michael Bourn had a hit as the Braves scored four runs on eight hits. On the mound Mike Minor allowed six hits and four runs while striking out three over five innings but he didn’t factor in the decision as Kris Medlen allowed three hits and two runs in just an inning of work to take the loss. For the series finale Atlanta looks to avoid the sweep as they start Brandon Beachy who has been their best pitcher this season. For the season Beachy has allowed 40 hits and 12 earned runs while striking out 44 over 61 innings of work for a 1.77 ERA.
The Washington Nationals didn’t play their best baseball on Saturday but they got the hits when they needed them and got the win. Danny Espinosa had two hits including a three run home run, Bryce Harper had two hits including a solo home run, and Ian Desmond had a hit as the Nationals scored eight runs on 12 hits. On the mound Stephen Strasburg allowed six hits and four earned runs while striking out six over five innings for his fifth win of the season and Tyler Clippard earned his third save. For Sunday’s game Washington starts Gio Gonzalez who has won his last four starts. For the season Gonzalez has allowed 32 hits and 12 earned runs while striking out 69 in 54.2 innings of work for a 1.98 ERA.
Atlanta is 9-3 in their last 12 game three of a series, 0-4 in their last four games as a favorite, and 6-2 in Beachy’s last eight starts. Washington is 5-1 in their last six games overall, 7-2 in their last nine road games, and 4-1 in Gonzalez’s last five road starts.
The total in this one is set at 6.5 and with these two starters it should stay under that number and that is my pick here.
