Washington Nationals vs. Miami Marlins

The Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins meet for game one of their weekend series in Washington.  The Nationals are -125 favorites over the Marlins with an over/under run total set at 7.5.

The Washington Nationals are leading the National League East and despite losing on Thursday they have been one of the better teams in baseball this season. Washington in 7-3 in their last 10 games have outscored their opponents by 10 runs, and have a two game lead in the division. As a team Washington is hitting .249 led by Jayson Werth at .347, Adam LaRoche at .314, Iaqn Desmond at .300, and Ryan Zimmerman at .240. As a team the Nationals pitching staff has an ERA of 1.92 with the starters at 1.65 and the bullpen at 2.45. For game one against the Marlins Washington starts Ross Detwiler who hasn’t lost yet this year. For the season Detwiler has allowed eight hits and one earned run while striking out eight over 10 innings of work for a 0.90 ERA.

The Miami Marlins are one of four teams in the N.L. East that are over .500 but they are also a N.L. East team that is chasing the Nationals in the standings. Miami has won four games in a row, are 2-4 on the road this season, and they have outscored their opponents by seven runs overall this season. As a team Miami is hitting .256 led by Emilio Bonifacio hitting .340, Omar Infante hitting .333, Hanley Ramirez hitting .300, and Logan Morrison hitting .286. As a team the Marlins pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.45 with the starters at 3.84 and the bullpen at 2.63. For game one at Washington Miami starts Carlos Zambrano who has two no decisions in his two starts. For the season Zambrano has allowed eight hits and five runs while striking out 10 over 12 innings of work for a 3.75 ERA.

Washington is 7-1 in their last eight games as a home favorite, 11-3 in their last 14 against the N.L. East, and 4-1 in Detwiler’s last five starts. Miami is 5-2 in their last seven games against a left handed starter, 2-8 in their last 10 road games, and 16-36 in their last 52 games as an underdog. Miami is 26-9 in their last 35 games in Washington.

While the Marlins have been winning late I’m not ready to jump off of the Nats because of a bad night and they are the choice here.
