Tampa Bay Rays vs. Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers and the Tampa Bay Rays meet in Arlington on Friday for game one of their weekend series.  The Rangers are -140 favorites over the Rays with an over/under run total set at 9.

The Texas Rangers are playing the best baseball in the Majors right now as they are getting quality pitching and hitting the cover off of the ball. The Rangers are 8-2 in their last 10 games, 7-3 at home this season, and they have a 5.5 game lead in the A.L. West. As a team, the Rangers are hitting .295 with Josh Hamilton hitting .390, Michael Young is hitting .356, Adrian Beltre is hitting .313, and Ian Kinsler is hitting .304. As a team the Rangers pitching staff has a combined ERA of 2.62 with the starters at 2.83 and the bullpen at 2.06. For game one against the Rays Texas starts Matt Harrison who has been outstanding this year. For the season Harrison has allowed 17 hits and four earned runs while striking out 13 over 21.2 innings of work for a 1.66 ERA.

The Tampa Bay Rays are playing solid baseball once again and they look like they are going to be a factor all season long. The Rays are 8-2 in their last 10 games, have won five in a row, are 4-6 on the road, and lead the A.L. East. As a team the Rays are hitting .247 with Matt Joyce hitting .322, Evan Longoria hitting .309, and Carlos Pena hitting .284. As a team the Rays pitching staff has a combined ERA of 4.33 with the starters at 3.34 and the bullpen at 6.96. For game one at Arlington Tampa Bay starts James Shields who has won all three of his decisions this season. For the year Shields has allowed 24 hits and nine earned runs while striking out 20 over 29.1 innings of work for a 2.76 ERA.

Texas is 7-1 in their last eight against the A.L. East, 66-20 in their last 86 games as a favorite, and 20-6 in Harrison’s last 26 starts. Tampa Bay is 5-0 in their last five games, 0-4 in their last four road games against a left handed starter, and 5-2 in Shields’ last seven starts as an underdog.

Texas is a big favorite here but his game sets up to be close and there is just a ton of value on the Rays and they are worth taking a shot on.
