Tampa Bay Rays vs. Los Angeles Angels

The Tampa Bay Rays and the Los Angles Angels close out their three game series on Thursday at Tropicana Field.  The Rays are -155 favorites over the Angels with an over/under run total set at 8.5.

The Tampa Bay Rays won for the third consecutive time on Wednesday as they held on for the win against the Angels. Ben Zobrist hit a solo home run, Carlos Pena had a hit and scored, and Desmond Jennings had a hit as the Rays scored three runs on six hits. Starter Jeremy Hellickson allowed five hits and a run while striking out five over six innings for his third win of the year and Fernando Rodney earned his sixth save. For Thursday’s game Tampa Bay starts Matt Moore who is still looking for his first win this year. For the season Moore has allowed 20 hits and 11 earned runs while striking out 11 over 19.1 innings of work for a 5.12 ERA.

The Los Angeles Angels are easily the most disappointing team in baseball as they are struggling including losing the first two games of their series in Tampa Bay. On Tuesday Vernon Wells had two hits including a home run, Torii Hunter had two hits, and Howard Kendrick had a hit as the Angels scored two runs on seven hits for the game. On the mound C.J. Wilson allowed six hits and two runs while striking out 11 over seven innings to take his second loss of the year while Jason Isringhausen allowed a run which ended up being the difference as he walked four batters. For Thursday’s game Los Angeles starts Jerome Williams who won for the first time this year in his last outing. For the season Williams has allowed 12 hits and eight earned runs while striking out seven over 9.1 innings of work for a 7.71 ERA.

Tampa Bay is 6-1 in their last seven games overall, 12-3 in their last 15 home games against a right handed starter, and 22-7 in their last 29 games as a home favorite. Los Angeles is 6-16 in their last 22 games overall, 1-4 in their last five games as an underdog, and 6-2 in Williams’ last eight starts. Los Angeles is 5-3 in their last eight meetings in Tampa Bay.

The Angels appear to be in deep trouble and they take another loss here as their hole gets deeper.
