St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds

The St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds meet for game three of their series at Busch Stadium.  The Cardinals are -165 favorites over the Reds with an over/under run total set at 7.5.

The St. Louis Cardinals are going for the sweep of the Reds for the series after winning the first two games on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Cardinals took out the big lumber on Wednesday as Carlos Beltran hit a two run home run, Tyler Greene hit a two run home run, and Rafael Furcal had four hits as they banged out 11 runs on 14 hits. Jaime Garcia pitched a gem allowing seven hits and a run while striking out three over seven innings of work to get his second win. For Thursday’s series finale St. Louis starts Adam Wainwright who has been awful thus far this season. For the year Wainwright has allowed 11 hits and 11 runs while striking out nine over 8.2 innings of work.

The Cincinnati Reds are now five games back in the National League Central and while it is way too early to push the panic button the Reds have not played well in head to head games with the Cardinals. On Wednesday Scott Rolen had two hits, Chris Heisey had a hit and scored a run, and Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips each had hits as the Reds scored one run on nine hits for the night. On the mound mat latos allowed nine hits and eight earned runs while striking out six over 5.2 innings of work to take his second loss of the year as he still looks for his first win as a member of the Reds. For Thursday’s game Cincinnati looks to salvage a win as they start Bronson Arroyo who has yet to have a decision this season. For the year Arroyo has allowed 13 hits and four earned runs while striking out eight over 13.2 innings of work.

St. Louis is 4-1 in their last five game three of a series, 19-6 in their last 25 home games, and 1-4 in Wainwright’s last five starts as a home favorite. Cincinnati is 2-6 in their last eight against the N.L. Central, 2-10 in their last 12 games against a team with a winning record and 2-5 in Arroyo’s last seven starts as an underdog. Cincinnati is 3-7 in Arroyo’s last 10 starts in St. Louis.

The Reds have not played well against the Cardinals but they should get the win in this one as Arroyo has had some tough luck and Wainwright hasn’t been good at all.
