San Diego Padres vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
The San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks meet up for game one of their series at Petco Park on Tuesday. The Diamondbacks are -120 favorites over the Padres with an over/under run total set at 6.5.
The expectations were low for the San Diego Padres this season and they have played like it thus far losing three of four to the Dodgers to open the season. The Padres were outscored 16 to 21 over the four games with LA but they avoided the sweep with a win on Sunday. Cameron Maybin is hitting .294, Jesus Guzman is hitting .250, and Jason Bartlett is hitting .214 as the Padres are hitting just .188 as a team. For Tuesday’s game San Diego starts Edinson Volquez who took the loss in his first start of the year. In his last outing Volquez allowed three hits and three runs walking four and striking out seven over five innings of work.
The Arizona Diamondbacks couldn’t have started their season any better as they swept the San Francisco Giants in a three game series. While the Diamondbacks outscored the Giants just 17-14 the three runs over three games was good enough for three wins and a three game lead over the team many predicted would walk away with the N.L. West. Miguel Montero is hitting .375, Chris Young is hitting .364, Ryan Roberts is hitting .231, and Justin Upton is hitting .222 while as a team Arizona is hitting .258. For Tuesday’s game Arizona starts Trevor Cahill who comes over from Oakland and who was an All Star just two years ago. Last year in Oakland Cahill was 12-14 with a 4.16 ERA allowing 214 hits and 96 earned runs while striking out 147 in 207.2 innings of work. If Cahill pitches like he did two years back he could be a huge boost to Arizona’s hopes of repeating as N.L. West champs.
San Diego is 15-37 in their last 52 games against the N.L. West, 3-8 in their last 11 games following a win, and 7-2 in their last nine home games against a right handed starter. Arizona is 37-15 following a win, 1-6 in their last seven road games, and 36-16 against a right handed starter. Arizona is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings of these two but 5-14 in the last 19 meetings in San Diego.
The total in this one is at 6.5 and even in a pitcher’s park it is too low making my pick the over.
