Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds

The Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds meet on Friday for game one of their weekend series at Wrigley Field. The Reds are -120 favorites over the Cubs with an over/under run total set at 9.

While it is a transitionary year for the Chicago Cubs as an organization, they had hoped to put a respectable product on the field but they are clearly falling short of doing that. The Cubs have lost five games in a row, are six games back in the National League Central, and they have been outscored by 21 runs. As a team the Cubs are hitting .233 with Starlin Castro hitting .360, Darwin Barney hitting .286, and Alfonso Soriano and David DeJesus hitting .250. As a team the Cubs pitching staff has an ERA of 4.90 with the starters at 4.72 and the bullpen at 5.30. For game one against the Reds Chicago starts Chris Volstad who took a loss in his last outing. For the season Volstad has allowed 11 hits and six earned runs while striking out 10 in 11 innings of work.

The Cincinnati Reds are hoping that their best baseball this season is in front of them as while they managed to salvage a win in their final game in St. Louis it has been a rough go of it thus far. The Reds are 3-7 in their last 10 games, 2-5 on the road this season and they have been outscored by 17 runs. As a team the Reds are hitting just .211 with Joey Votto hitting .289, Zack Cozart hitting .286, Brandon Phillips hitting .235, and Drew Stubbs hitting .229. As a team Reds pitching staff has an ERA of 4.07 with the starters at 4.50 and the bullpen at 3.27. For game one at Wrigley Cincinnati starts Homer Bailey who has lost in both of his prior starts this year. For the season Bailey has allowed 13 hits and seven runs while striking out eight over 11.2 innings of work for a 5.40 ERA.

Chicago is 8-20 in their last 28 games as an underdog, 0-4 in their last four games against a right handed starter, and 2-5 in their last seven home games. Cincinnati is 2-5 in their last seven games overall, 1-5 in their last six games against a right handed starter, and 5-1 in Bailey’s last six starts as a road favorite. Cincinnati is 21-9 in the last 30 games between these two.

The total in this one is set at nine and this one should go over that number so my pick is over.
