Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays
The Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays meet for an early start for the Patriots Day/Boston Marathon edition of baseball at Fenway Park. The Red Sox are -115 favorites over the Rays with an over/under run total set at 9.5.
The Boston Red Sox may have started slow on the road but since they have been home it has been smooth sailing winning the first three games in their series with the Rays. On Sunday Cody Ross had just one hit but it was a three run home run, Mike Aviles hit a solo home run, and David Ortiz had three hits and the Red Sox scored six runs on eight hits. Starter Felix Doubront allowed nine hits and four runs while striking out seven over five innings of work to not factor in the decision as Vincente Padilla got the win and Alfredo Aceves picked up his second save of the year. For Monday’s game Boston starts Daniel Bard who looked shaky in his first outing. In his last start at Toronto Bard allowed eight hits and five runs while striking out six over five innings to take the loss.
The Tampa Bay Rays have gone from first place to last place in the course of one road trip as they have lost four in a row and while they started slow a year ago they don’t want to need to have the miracle finish they had a year ago to make the post season. On Sunday Luke Scott hit a solo home run, and Desmond Jennings, Jeff Keppinger, and Sean Rodriguez all had two hits each as the Rays had 13 hits that they were able to convert into only four runs which just wasn’t enough. Matt Moore allowed eight hits and six runs while striking out five over 6.1 innings of work to take the loss. For Monday’s game Tampa Bay starts James Shields
Boston is 9-21 in their last 30 games overall, 8-19 against t a right handed starter, and 2-5 in their last seven game four of a series. Tampa Bay is 8-3 in their last 11 games against the A.L. East, 1-5 in their last six games overall, and 3-7 in Shields’ last 10 road starts. The Rays are 1-9 in Shields’ last 10 road starts against the Red Sox.
With the total set at 9.5 and not one game in this series staying below that number the easy choice here is the over.
