Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Providence Friars

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish look to get back to winning as they close out their regular season against the Providence Friars.  The Fighting Irish are -11 point favorites over the Friars with an over/under point total set at 129.5.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have put together a strong year but Mike Brey’s team has lost back to back games and would like to avoid closing the season out with three losses. ND is 12-5 in the Big East, 15-1 at home this season, and they are tied for third place in the conference standings. Jerian Grant is averaging 12.6 points and 4.9 assists, Eric Atkins is averaging 12.5 points, and Jack Cooley is averaging 12 points and 8.9 rebounds. As a team the Fighting Irish are averaging 67.1 points and they are shooting 43.4 percent while defensively they are allowing 61.5 points and their opponents are shooting 40.9 percent. Notre Dame will definitely be a team to contend with in the conference and NCAA Tournaments.

The Providence Friars have played hard this season but it hasn’t equaled a lot of wins for Ed Cooley’s team. Providence is 4-13 in the Big East, 4-7 on the road this season, they are in 15th place in the 16 team conference, and 1-5 against teams ranked in the top 25. Vincent Council is averaging 16.1 points and 7.4 assists, Bryce Cotton is averaging 14.7 points, LaDonte Henton is averaging 14.2 points and 8.5 rebounds, and Gerard Coleman is averaging 13.5 points and 5.1 rebounds. As a team Providence is averaging 69.6 points and they are shooting 43.4 percent while defensively they are allowing 68.7 points and their opponents are shooting 41.8 percent. The Friars can score with anyone but they have had issues stopping people.

Notre Dame is 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 games overall, 3-10 against the spread following a loss, and 4-1 against the spread in their last five home games. Providence is 3-9 against the spread on the road against a team with a winning home record, 4-1 against the spread following a cover, 2-9 against the spread against a team with a home winning percentage better than .600. The road team is 8-3 against the spread in the last 11 meetings of these two.

We should see plenty of scoring here and my pick will be on the over.
