West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Marquette Golden Eagles

The West Virginia Mountaineers and the Marquette Golden Eagles battle it out in Morgantown for a rare Friday Night Big East college basketball match up.  The Mountaineers are -1.5 point favorites over the Golden Eagles with an over/under point total set at 144.

It is reaching desperate times for the West Virginia Mountaineers when it comes to the NCAA Tournament as Bob Huggins’ team has lost three of their last four games and six of their last eight. WVU is 7-8 in the Big East, 10-4 at home this season, tied for ninth place in the conference standings, and 1-5 against teams ranked in the top 25. Kevin Jones is averaging 20.2 points and 11.2 rebounds, Darryl Bryant is averaging 16.5 points, and Deniz Kilicli is averaging 11.4 points. As a team West Virginia is averaging 72.2 points and they are shooting 44.9 percent while defensively they are allowing 66.6 points and their opponents shoot 44.5 percent. The Mountaineers have played the seventh ranked schedule in the nation and have a 42 RPI but it could be the wins and losses which are the barrier between them and March Madness.

The Marquette Golden Eagles are looking a high NCAA Tournament seeding as Buzz Williams’ team has won four games in a row and 11 of their last 12. Marquette is 12-3 in the Big East, 5-4 on the road this season, and tied for second place in the conference standings. Darius Johnson-Odom is averaging 18.7 points, Jae Crowder is averaging 17.1 points and 7.7 rebounds, and Vander Blue is averaging 8.5 points and 4.3 rebounds. Marquette is averaging 76.9 points, 17.5 assists, and they are shooting 46.3 percent while defensively they are allowing 65.5 points and their opponents are shooting 40.8 percent. Marquette won’t win the division this year but no team wants to see them in their bracket in March.

West Virginia is 1-5 against the spread in their last six games overall, 0-4 against the spread in their last four home games, and 7-3 against the spread following a loss of 20 points or more. Marquette is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games overall, 6-1 against the spread in their last seven road games, and 8-3 against the spread against a team with a winning record. The favorite has covered in five of the last seven meetings of these two.

The total is set at 144 and it shouldn’t be much of an issue.
