Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Providence Friars
The Providence Friars and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights meet on Wednesday in Big East college hoops action. The Friars are -2 point favorites over the Scarlet Knights with an over/under point total set at 134.
The Providence Friars have lost four games in a row and the overall season has been a struggle for Ed Cooley’s team. Providence is 1-8 in Big East play, 9-3 at home this season, and in 16th and last place in the conference standings. Vincent Council is averaging 16.3 points and 7.3 assists, Bryce Cotton is averaging 15.1 points, LeDontae Henton is averaging 13.6 points and 8.9 rebounds, and Gerald Coleman is averaging 13.4 points and 5.1 rebounds. As a team Providence is averaging 70 points and their opponents are shooting 44.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 67.9 points and their opponents are shooting 40.9 percent. Providence has a winning overall record but they will be hard pressed to finish the season with one.
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have a losing record in Big East play but Mike Rice’s team has pulled a few upsets that have given them credibility. RU is 4-5 in the Big East, 1-4 on the road, and tied for 10th place in the conference standings. Eli Carter is averaging 13.5 points, Myles Mack is averaging 10.3 points, and Gilvydas Biruta is averaging 9.6 points and 5.3 rebounds. As a team Rutgers is averaging 66.7 points and they are shooting 43.8 percent while defensively they are allowing 63 points and their opposition is shooting 40 percent. Rutgers might have a chance to upset the apple cart in the Big East Tournament but to make the big dance they are going to need to finish the season with a flurry.
Providence is 3-10 against the spread in their last 13 Big East games, 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games overall, and 4-11 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Rutgers is 4-1 against the spread following a win, 9-3-1 against the spread in their last 13 Big East games, and 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games overall. The home team has covered the spread in 10 of the last 14 meetings of these two.
I don’t believe that Providence deserves to be favored over anyone in the Big East right now so it only makes sense to take the points.
