Purdue Boilermakers vs. Northwestern Wildcats

The Purdue Boilermakers and the Northwestern Wildcats meet in a must win Big Ten match up in West Lafayette on Saturday.  The Boilermakers are -6.5 point favorites over the Wildcats with an over/under point total of 139.5.

The Purdue Boilermakers knew this would be a rebuilding year but after a solid start Matt Painter’s team has lost five of their last six games as they scramble for answers. Purdue is 5-6 in the Big 10, 10-3 at home this season, and they are in sixth place in the conference standings. Robbie Hummel is averaging 15.1 points and 6.3 rebounds, Lewis Jackson is averaging 10 points, and Ryne Smith is averaging 9.3 points. As a team Purdue is averaging 71 points and they are shooting 43.3 percent while defensively they are allowing 64.5 and their opponents are shooting 42.9 percent. Purdue will have a chance to string some wins together over the final month of the season and that’s what it will take if they hope to go to the big dance.

The Northwestern Wildcats are still trying to shake the stigma of never making the NCAA Tournament but Bill Carmody’s team looks to be making a late run to show the selection committee that they belong. Northwestern is 5-6 in the Big 10, 2-5 on the road this season, and in a three way tie for sixth place in the conference. John Shurna is averaging 19.5 points and 5.7 rebounds, Drew Crawford is averaging 16.9 points and 4.7 rebounds, and Dave Sobolewski is averaging 9.0 points and 4.0 assists. As a team the Wildcats are averaging 70.2 points and they are shooting 45.7 percent while defensively they are allowing 67 points and their opponents are shooting 44.9 percent. Northwestern is looking for revenge for a home loss a few weeks back to the Boliers.

Purdue is 4-10 against the spread in their last 14 Big Ten games, 0-4 against the spread in their last four home games, and 2- 5 against the spread in their last seven games overall. Northwestern is 3-8 against the spread against a team with a winning percentage above .600, 2-5 against the spread following a win, and 5-2 against the spread following a cover. The underdog is 4-1-1 against the spread in the last six meetings of these two.

Purdue got the best of Northwestern in the first meeting but the Cats get it here as they split the season series.
