Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Villanova Wildcats

The Pittsburgh Panthers and the Villanova Wildcats look to revitalize their seasons as they meet on Sunday in Pittsburgh.  The Panthers are -8 point favorites over the Wildcats with an over/under point total set at 144.5.

The Pittsburgh Panthers have won three games in a row as Jamie Dixon’s team appears to be out of their mid-season funk and are back to playing as they are capable of. Pitt is 3-7 in the Big East, 9-5 at home, and they are tied for 13th place in the conference. Ashton Gibbs is averaging 16.4 points, Nasir Robinson is averaging 12.4 points and 6.6 rebounds, and Lamar Patterson is averaging 9.4 points and 5.7 rebounds. As a team Pittsburgh is averaging 71.4 points, 16.1 assists, and they are shooting 46.2 percent while defensively they are allowing 66.6 points and their opponents shoot 44.1 percent. There is plenty of season left for Pittsburgh to save their season and the way they have been playing we have to believe they will accomplish it.

The Villanova Wildcats haven’t packed it in this season but it’s clear that Jay Wright doesn’t have the type of team he has had in recent years. Villanova is 3-7 in the Big East, 1-6 on the road this year, and they are tied for 13th place with Pitt in the standings. Maalik Wayns is averaging 18.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.6 assists, Dominic Cheek is averaging 12.4 points and 4.3 rebounds, and Mouphtaou Yarou is averaging 11.1 points and 8.0 rebounds. As a team Villanova is averaging 73.8 points and they are shooting 42.1 percent while defensively they are allowing 71.8 points and their opponents are shooting 41.4 percent. Villanova’s defense just hasn’t been good enough against Big East competition.

Pittsburgh is 5-1 against the spread in their last six Big East games, 5-2 against the spread following a win, and 2-9 against the spread in their last 11 home games. Villanova is 4-11 against the spread in their last 15 road games, 6-17 against the spread in their last 23 Big East games, and 5-17 against the spread following a loss. The underdog has covered in four of the last five meetings of these two.

Pittsburgh looks to have bounced back and if they are back to where they were they are a huge value in this spot at this price.
