Penn St. Nittany Lions vs. Iowa Hawkeyes

The Penn State Nittany Lions and the Iowa Hawkeyes meet on Thursday Night in Big Ten college hoops action.  The Nittany Lions are -2.5 point favorites over the Hawkeyes with an over/under point total set at 137.5.

The Penn State Nittany Lions have suffered through a brutal season but they didn’t look like it in their last outing as Patrick Chambers’ team won going away against Nebraska. PSU is 3-10 in the Big 10, 9-5 at home this season, and in 11th and last place in the conference standings. Tim Frazier is averaging 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.4 assists, Jermaine Marshall is averaging 10.4 points, and Cammeron Woodyard is averaging 8.8 points and 4.2 rebounds. As a team Penn State is averaging 61.8 points and they are shooting 38.7 percent while defensively they are allowing 64.8 points and their opponents are shooting 42.7 percent. Penn State has had little to cheer about this season and have not strung together back to back conference wins.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have had a week off and for Fran McCaffrey’s team it has been a week to stew about a 19 point loss to Northwestern that ended a two game winning streak. Iowa is 5-7 in the Big 10, 2-6 on the road this season, and in a three way tie for seventh place in the conference standings. Matt Gatens is averaging 14 points, Roy Devyn Marble is averaging 11.1 points, and Aaron White is averaging 10.2 points and 5.3 rebounds. As a team Iowa is averaging 73.8 points and they are shooting 45.4 percent while defensively they are allowing 72.5 points and their opponents are shooting 45.9 percent. Iowa beat Penn State by 13 points just two games back.

Penn State is 5-1 against the spread in their last six home games, 1-5 against the spread following a win, and 5-11 against the spread in their last 16 games overall. Iowa is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven Thursday games, 5-1 against the spread against a team with a losing record, and 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games against Penn State.

The total is set at 137.5 but I don’t have this game getting there.  I’m going with the under.

Pick
