Ohio St. Buckeyes vs. Purdue Boilermakers

The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Purdue Boilermakers battle it out in Columbus on Tuesday in Big Ten college basketball action.  The Buckeyes are -16 point favorites over the Boilermakers with an over/under point total set at 131.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are one of the top teams in the nation and Thad Matta’s team has won five games in a row. OSU is 8-2 in the Big 10, 15-0 at home this season, and have a game lead on Michigan State in the conference standings. Jared Sullinger is averaging 17.4 points and 9.1 rebounds, William Buford is averaging 14.9 points and 4.7 rebounds, and Deshaun Thomas is averaging 14.7 points. As a team Ohio State is averaging 76.5 points and their opponents are averaging 55.4 points, 9.0 assists, and they shoot just 39.2 percent. Ohio State still doesn’t have depth, the same issue that put an end to their season a year ago, but their front line players can compete with any team in the nation.

The Purdue Boilermakers are hopeful to be part of March Madness but Matt Painter’s team has lost three of their last four games. Purdue is 5-5 in the Big Ten, 3-3 on the road this season, and in a three way tie for fifth place in the conference standings. Robbie Hummel is averaging 15.2 points and 6.2 rebounds, Lewis Jackson is averaging 9.9 points, and Ryne Smith is averaging 9.3 points. As a team Purdue is averaging 70.4 points and they are shooting 42.9 percent while defensively they are allowing 63.5 points and their opposition is shooting 42.5 percent. While the Boilermakers are taking some losses they have all been against the heavy hitters in the Big Ten and nationally ranked teams.

Ohio State is 6-0 against the spread in their last six home games, 5-0 against the spread in their last five Big Ten games, and 4-0 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Purdue is 8-3 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover, 1-5 against the spread in their last six games overall, and 4-0 against the spread following a double digit home loss. Purdue is 6-13-1 against the spread in the last 20 meetings of these two.

The number here looks big but it isn’t big enough for the Boilers as the Buckeyes have been tough at home and they should make this one look very easy.
