Louisville Cardinals vs. Connecticut Huskies

The Louisville Cardinals and the Connecticut Huskies battle it out in Monday Big East college basketball action.  The Cardinals are -4.5 point favorites over the Huskies with an over/under point total set at 128.5.

The Louisville Cardinals have won four games in a row and while all of those games were against teams in the bottom half of the Big East standings Rick Pitino’s team is climbing the standings. Louisville is 6-4 in Big East play, 14-2 at home this season, and in a three way tie for fifth place in the conference. Kyle Kuric is averaging 13.2 points and 4.8 rebounds, Gorgui Dieng is averaging 10.2 points and 9.5 rebounds, and Russ Smith is averaging 12.4 points. As a team Louisville is averaging 71.3 points and they are shooting 43.8 percent while defensively they are allowing 61.9 points and their opponents are shooting just 37 percent. The Cardinals will be stepping up their competition over the next few games and we will see just where UL fits in the national picture.

The UConn Huskies ended their four game losing streak with a win in their last game, Saturday against Seton Hall, but they are moving forward without their Head Coach Jim Calhoun who is on an indefinite leave. UConn is 5-5 in the Big East, 2-4 on the road this year, and in ninth place in the conference standings. Jeremy Lamb is averaging 17.6 points, Shabazz Napier is averaging 13.3 points and 5.7 assists, and Andre Drummond is averaging 10.2 points and 7.7 rebounds. As a team Connecticut is averaging 68.6 points and they are shooting 45.9 percent and defensively they are allowing 61.3 points and their opponents are shooting 36.7 percent. UConn won it all a year ago with a late run and they hope to do it again this year.

Louisville is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games overall, 11-5 against the spread in their last 16 games following a cover, and 4-1 against the spread in their last five Monday games. UConn is 11-3 against the spread following a cover, 1-5 against the spread in their last six road games, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five games overall.  The underdog is 5-2-1 against the spread in the last eight meetings of these two.

The total is set at 128.5 and while we should see some good defense I have this one going over.
