Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Wisconsin Badgers
The Iowa Hawkeyes and the Wisconsin Badgers battle it out on Thursday in Big Ten college basketball action. The Badgers are -5 point favorites over the Hawkeyes with an over/under point total set at 126.
The Iowa Hawkeyes have had some chances to make it interesting this season but at this point all Fran McCaffrey’s team has to shoot for is to finish over .500. Iowa is 6-8 in the Big 10, 12-5 at home this season, in seventh place in the conference standings, and 3-3 against teams ranked in the top 25. Matt Gatens is averaging 14.8 points, Roy Devyn Marble is averaging 11.1 points and 4.0 rebounds, and Aaron White is averaging 10.4 points and 5.6 rebounds. As a team Iowa is averaging 73.6 points and they are shooting 45.2 percent while defensively they are allowing 72.1 points and their opponents are shooting 45.4 percent. Iowa has shown the ability to pull the upset and with this being their second to last home game of the season they will hope to pull one off here.
The Wisconsin Badgers have lost two of their last four games but looking at the bigger picture Bo Ryan’s team has won eight of their last 10 games. Wisconsin is 9-5 in the Big 10, 6-3 on the road this season, and they are in fourth place in the conference standings. Jordan Taylor is averaging 14.3 points, Ryan Evans is averaging 10.6 points and 6.9 rebounds, and Jared Berggren is averaging 10.5 points and 4.9 rebounds. As a team the Badgers are averaging 63.9 points and they are shooting 42.3 percent while defensively they are allowing 51.1 points and their opponents are shooting 37.4 percent. Wisconsin is once again going to be highly regarded going into March but they have been disappointing of late in a similar role.
Iowa is 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 home games, 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 games against a team with a winning percentage higher than .600, and 5-2 against the spread following a win. Wisconsin is 0-4 against the spread following a win, 1-5 against the spread in their last six games overall, and 1-5 against the spread in their last six trips to Iowa. The home team has covered in five of the last six meetings of these two.
Wisconsin is rightfully favored here but this is a series dominated by the dog and the home team so I like the Hawkeyes to cover in a tight one.
