DePaul Blue Demons vs. Marquette Golden Eagles

The DePaul Blue Demons and the Marquette Golden Eagles meet nm Monday in Big East college basketball action.  The Golden Eagles are -10 point favorites over the Blue Demons with an over/under point total set at 156.

The DePaul Blue Demons are near the bottom of the Big East standings but Oliver Purnell’s team has done some things this season that they weren’t able to do a season ago. DePaul is 2-8 in Big East play, 6-6 at home this season, and they are in 15th place in the 16 team conference. Cleveland Melvin is averaging 18 points and 6.8 rebounds, Brandon Young is averaging 15.5 points and 5.0 assists, and Jeremiah Kelly is averaging 8.8 points. As a team DePaul is averaging 74.5 points and they are shooting 43.9 percent while defensively they are allowing 75.1 points and their opponents shoot 48 percent. It’s a similar story for DePaul as it is for many big conference teams that are struggling and it’s an inability to play defense.

The Marquette Golden Eagles had a seven game winning streak as they entered Saturday’s game against Notre Dame but Buzz Williams team ended up on the wrong side of the route and the streak was over. Marquette is 8-3 in Big East play, 3-4 on the road this year, and they are tied for second place in the conference. Darius Johnson-Odom is averaging 18 points, Jae Crowder is averaging 16 points and 7.5 rebounds, and Davante Gardener is averaging 9.8 points and 5.3 rebounds. As a team Marquette is averaging 75.4 points and they are shooting 45.3 percent while defensively they are allowing 64.6 points and their opponents shoot 40.2 percent. Marquette is among the better teams in the nation and how they bounce back from their loss will say a lot about this team.

DePaul is 4-10-1 against the spread in their last 15 games against the Big East, 0-5 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover, and 3-1-2 against the spread in their last six Monday games. Marquette is 4-1 against the spread in their last five road games, 4-1-1 against the spread in their last six games following a loss, and 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 Big East games. The favorite is 13-5 against the spread in their last 18 games between these two.

The total is set at a hefty 156 and I still have it going above that aggressive number.
