Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Providence Friars

The Cincinnati Bearcats and the Providence Friars meet on Wednesday in Cincinnati for a Big East hoops battle.  The Bearcats are -11 point favorites over the Friars with an over/under point total set at 137.5.

The Cincinnati bearcats were looking like a sire ting to make the NCAA Tournament just a few weeks ago but since then Mick Cronin’s team has lost four of their last six games. UC is 7-5 in the Big East, 10-4 at home this season, and they are in seventh place in the conference standings. Sean Kilpatrick is averaging 15 points and 5.0 rebounds, Dion Dixon is averaging 13.6 points, Yancy Gates is averaging 12.6 points and 9.3 rebounds, and Cashmere Wright is averaging 10.9 points. As a team Cincinnati is averaging 70 points and they are shooting 42.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 61.5 points and they are shooting 41.8 percent. Cincinnati has shown they can compete with the big boys this year and they will need to do so down the stretch if they want to be part of March Madness.

It’s been a horrible year for Ed Cooley and the Providence Friars and currently they have lost three in a row and eight of their last nine games. Providence is 2-11 in the Big East, 3-6 on the road this season, and they are in 16th and last place in the conference standings. Vincent Council is averaging 16.1 points and 7.4 assists, Bryce Cotton is averaging 15 points, Gerard Coleman is averaging 13.8 points and 5.1 rebounds, and LaDonte Henton is averaging 13.5 points and 8.4 rebounds. As a team Providence is averaging 70.1 points and they are shooting 44.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 68.3 points and their opponents are shooting 41.4 percent. Providence just doesn’t play any defense and doing that in the Big East makes it very difficult to win games.

Cincinnati is 11-27 against the spread in their last 38 home games, 1-4 against the spread in their last five Big East games, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five home games against a team with a losing road record. Providence is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games overall, 7-16 against the spread following a loss, and 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 road games against a team with a winning home record. The road team has covered in six of the last seven meetings of these two.

Cincinnati is looking like they are on the bubble and they are going to need to start making statements all the way in and they make one here.
