St. Mary’s Gaels vs. San Francisco Dons
The San Francisco Dons face a huge task in the St Mary’s Gaels on the road. The Dons will try to bounce back from an 81-56 defeat at Brigham Young while the Gaels fought past San Diego by a 78-72 for their fourth straight win. The Gaels are -16.5 point favorites over the Dons with an over/under point total set at 144.5.
It looks as if San Francisco has scored their way to a winning record but not so much lately with defeats in four of five. The Dons need to fill the cylinder because their defense has given up at least 74 points in all five contests which strains an already productive offense which is averaging 72 points on 44.6% and allowing 68 points on 44%. That’s not a good way to compete in the West Coast with scoring machines like St Mary’s, Gonzaga and Brigham Young lying in wait. In fact, Brigham Young delivered a beating last time out with 53.7% from the floor and a potent 12 of 19 from long range. For their party the USF offense fell well short with only 32.8% accuracy and 6 of 29 in a failed long distance game. The Cougars also won the boards with the Dons managing a slight edge in turnovers. Michael Williams led the team with only ten points with 13 players seeing the floor with ten scoring.
The Big West looks like it will be a two team race with Gonzaga which will surprise no one as these teams have dominated the conference. The Gaels have rebounded nicely from a rare defeat at the hands of Baylor with four wins in a row with three coming in conference action. St Mary’s is the most complete team in the Big West with the ability to win with defense or offense and are lights out when both units are at the top of their game. Only the Gaels offense was at their best against San Diego with plenty of production from the O on 43.5% accuracy. The Toreros put up a stronger than expected fight but with advantages on the backboards and turnovers and a decisive 25-15 margin at the foul line the game belonged to SMC. SD had no answer for Rob Jones who poured in a game high 31 points and 12 rebounds with Matthew Delladova and Jordan Page adding 16 and 13 points respectively with the former posting five pulls and eight assists.
I think in this game with such a big spread we have to look at which team has the most potential to cover. That team is St Mary’s but I think this pick has more guess in it than a strong belief in either team but the Gaels win by alot with a solid performance.
