St. Joseph’s Hawks vs. Xavier Musketeers
The Xavier Musketeers continue to try and rebuild their season as they face the St. Joseph’s Hawks in A-10 college hoops action. The Musketeers are -6 point favorites over the Hawks with an over/under point total set at 136.
The Xavier Musketeers were nationally ranked and appeared to be heading even higher but an on court brawl against Cincinnati, suspensions, and then dropping five out of six games sent Chris Mack’s team into a tailspin. Of late Xavier is back to business winning three in a row and they are in the three way tie for first in the Atlantic 10 with plenty of talented players and plenty of basketball left to play. Mark Lyons is averaging 16.3 points, Tu Holloway is averaging 16 points and 5.2 assists, and Dezmine Wells is averaging 10.4 points and 5.4 rebounds. As a team XU is averaging 71.7 points, 38.9 rebounds, and they are shooting 45.7 percent while defensively they are allowing 65.1 points and their opponents are shooting 38.5 percent. Xavier has already shown they have what it takes to be an elite team and if they play their way into March Madness this is a team capable of making a run.
The St. Joe’s Hawks are off to a 2-2 start in A-10 play but Phil Martelli’s team hasn’t been able to win consistently of late. St. Joe’s is 2-4 on the road this year, have played the 46th ranked schedule in the nation, and are 2-5 against teams with an RPI better than 100. Carl Jones is averaging 17.2 points, Langston Galloway is averaging 15.9 points and 4.4 rebounds, C.J. Aiken is averaging 11.4 points and 5.8 rebounds, and Ronald Roberts Jr. is averaging 10.2 points and 6.0 rebounds. As a team St. Joe’s is averaging 72.8 points, 15.1 assists, and they are shooting 47.9 percent while defensively they are allowing 66.6 points and their opponents are shooting 37.8 percent. While St. Joe’s is flying under the radar, this team can play and can beat anyone on any given night and shouldn’t be overlooked.
Xavier is 7-2 against the spread in their last nine A-10 games, 7-3 against the spread following a cover, and 2-6 against the spread in their last eight home games against a team with a losing road record. St. Joe’s is 6-0 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover, 8-1 against the spread in their last nine road games, and 6-2 against the spread in their last eight A-10 games. The underdog is 8-3 against the spread in the last 11 meetings of these two.
While the line here doesn’t seem all that imposing at six it is going to be a tough nut for the Musketeers to crack in this spot.
