St. John’s Red Storm vs. Villanova Wildcats
The St. John’s Red Storm and the Villanova Wildcats meet for a Big East college hoops battle on Saturday. The Wildcats are -1.5 point favorites over the Red Storm with an over/under point total set at 141.
The St. John’s Red Storm have dropped three games in a row as their season is washing away before their very eyes but Steve Lavin’s team does have some talent and have shown the ability to step it up. St. John’s is 2-5 in their Big East games, tied for 12th place in the conference, and 7-3 at home this season. Maurice Harkless is averaging 15.4 points and 8.3 rebounds, D’Angeelo Harrison is averaging 14.6 points, and God’sgift Achiuwa is averaging 11.7 points and 6.8 rebounds. Offensively St. John’s is averaging 65.1 points and they are shooting 41.8 percent while defensively they are allowing 67.3 points and their opponents are shooting 42.3 percent. With Steve Lavin’s health issues this team just has not been responding.
The Villanova Wildcats just aren’t having the year we have grown accustomed to seeing from Jay Wright’s team. Villanova is tied for 12th place in the Big East, 2-5 in conference play, and 0-5 on the road this season. Maalik Wayns is averaging 18.2 points, 4,2 rebounds, and 4.8 assists, Mouphtaou Yarou is averaging 12 points and 8.1 rebounds, and Dominic Cheek is averaging 11.9 points and 4.2 rebounds. As a team Villanova is averaging 73.3 points and they are shooting 42.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 70.4 points and their opposition is shooting 41.2 percent. Like most struggling teams Villanova’s problems are on defense.
St. John’s is 1-4 against the spread in their last five home games, 1-5 against the spread in their last six games overall, and 1-5 against the spread in their last six Big East games. Villanova is 5-15 against the spread in their last 20 Big East games, 3-10 against the spread in their last 13 road games, and 1-10 against the spread following a win. The road team has covered in four of the last five meetings of these two.
St. John’s has been terrible but being home against a Villanova team which hasn’t been much better than the Johnnies they get it done.
